Lessons 85 to 93: Exploring Time Signatures and Ghost Note Execution on the Handpan

Lesson description and learning notes

In this session, we begin by completing the topic of time signatures, which was introduced in previous lessons. Understanding time signatures is crucial for rhythmic accuracy and creating diverse handpan compositions

Time signatures are generally divided into three main categories: simple meters, compound meters, and odd (or irregular) rhythms. Each category has its own unique characteristics that influence how rhythms are counted and played. Mastery of these different meter types allows handpan players to achieve greater versatility, musical expression, and rhythmic precision

One of the most important and impactful techniques for handpan performance and composition is the ghost note technique. Ghost notes are subtle notes played softly, almost imperceptibly, adding rhythmic texture, depth, and dynamic nuance to your handpan playing. While these notes are felt by the listener, they are not emphasized or distinctly heard in the same way as regular strokes

In musical notation, ghost notes are typically written within small parentheses to indicate their soft, understated execution

During practice, pay careful attention to the execution of ghost notes: focus on hand control, finger placement, and dynamic consistency. Integrating ghost notes with regular strokes enhances groove, syncopation, and overall musicality, making your handpan performances more expressive and professional

By incorporating these exercises into your daily handpan practice routine, you will strengthen timing, rhythm reading, hand coordination, and dynamic control, essential skills for both intermediate and advanced handpan players
