One of the essential accessories after purchasing a handpan is protective oil for the maintenance and care of the instrument. Panersia’s handpan protective oil is of very high quality and protects your handpan against rust. It’s worth mentioning that a microfiber cloth is also provided along with the Panersia oil. How often you clean your handpan depends both on personal preference and the environmental conditions you live in. We recommend cleaning your instrument especially after it has been exposed to open air and humid environments for an extended period.

Proper Method for Using Handpan Oil
How often and when you clean and oil your handpan depends both on personal preference and the environmental conditions you live in.
In general, it’s recommended to clean and oil your instrument especially after prolonged exposure to open air, humidity, or periods of frequent use (playing or practicing).
Step 1:
To remove dust, fingerprints, and any dirt, it’s preferable to use a microfiber cloth.
Step 2:
If a microfiber cloth is not available, use a soft cloth (such as paper towels, old or worn-out clothes) lightly moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol to wipe away any remaining dust or old oil on the handpan. Make sure to clean both sides of the instrument.
To prevent scratching, lightly spray alcohol on the surface and gently wipe it in circular motions with a microfiber cloth before the alcohol evaporates.
Note:
If your handpan has no oil layer at all, follow the specific cleaning instructions provided by your handpan maker before applying any oil.
Step 3:
To increase your handpan’s resistance to rust, you can use Panersia’s protective oil or any oil recommended by other reputable handpan makers.
Use a microfiber cloth, an old cotton cloth, or any non-shedding fabric. Apply a few drops of Panersia oil onto the handpan and gently spread it across the surface. Repeat if necessary.
Ensure that the entire surface is covered with a thin protective oil layer.
Please note that applying oil often slightly darkens the appearance of the handpan and may open up its sound.
If you live in a humid environment, it’s crucial to regularly monitor the surface of your handpan for dryness and reapply oil as needed, possibly several times a week, to prevent rust.
Step 4:
Make sure not to leave an excessive amount of oil on the handpan (this is mainly for convenience and playability, not because it would damage the instrument).
To remove any excess oil, use a clean, dry microfiber cloth or a piece of soft cotton fabric.
Repeat this process for both sides of the instrument if needed.
Additional Tips:
There is no need to clean or oil the inside of the handpan.
Always keep your handpan outside the case or leave the case zipper open to allow airflow and prevent rust.
The need for re-oiling is based on how often you play and how much you touch the surface.
Always try to maintain a thin layer of oil on the handpan, regardless of its material.
Over time, visual changes to the surface may naturally occur due to the nature of metal; this is normal as long as it does not affect the sound quality or tuning of your instrument.
