One of the most important and versatile techniques in handpan (hang drum) playing is the flageolet (harmonic) technique
Due to the unified body of the handpan, striking one note causes subtle vibrations in other notes, producing a rich blend of harmonic overtones. This natural resonance contributes to the handpan’s enchanting and “dreamy” sound, making it a truly unique instrument
Each note on the handpan consists of three main components: the fundamental frequency, the fifth (quint), and the octave (eighth). The flageolet technique allows you to isolate and emphasize these harmonics, giving each note a distinct melodic and harmonic color
In this session, we focus on learning and practicing the flageolet technique, and applying it while performing Piece 24from the Panersia handpan educational series. By mastering this technique, you can expand your melodic expression and explore the full harmonic potential of the handpan
