In this session, we focus on learning and performing ornamentation notes on the handpan. Ornamentation notes are small, decorative notes marked with a slanted line and placed next to the main note. They carry very little rhythmic value and are meant to embellish the melody rather than alter the timing of the main notes
When performing these notes, it is important to integrate them seamlessly with the main note, keeping the same rhythmic value and flow. Practicing these ornamentation notes will enhance your precision, control, and expressive capabilities on the handpan (hang drum)
The ornamentation techniques we will practice together include:
Flams: Single grace notes played just before the main note for a subtle accent.
Drags: Double grace notes that add a layered rhythmic texture.
Additionally, we will explore seven-curve and eight-curve ornament notes, foundational techniques adapted from basic percussion and handpan drumming methods, which help build finger agility and rhythmic finesse
Pay close attention to hand placement, dynamics, and timing when executing these ornamentation notes. Regular practice of these techniques will improve your ability to add subtle nuances to your handpan melodies, creating more expressive and professional performances
