Backing tracks for this session
In this session, we focus on performing Piece 27 from the Playpan training program, bringing together the techniques and concepts learned in previous lessons. This piece is written in a 4/4 time signature, also known as “common time,” which means it follows a steady four-count rhythm. Practicing in 4/4 is essential for handpan players because it forms the foundation of countless rhythms in both solo and ensemble performances
Begin the exercise by playing slowly and mindfully, paying attention to correct finger placement, hand coordination, and consistent rhythm. Once you feel comfortable, gradually increase the tempo and move toward playing at the original speed. To make the practice more enjoyable and effective, try performing along with a background track—this will improve your timing, flow, and sense of musical awareness
This session is not only about learning a new piece but also about reinforcing the importance of rhythm control, mindful practice, and expressive playing. With consistent training, you’ll notice how your handpan performance skills, rhythmic stability, and musical creativity develop naturally
By mastering Piece 27, you prepare yourself for more advanced handpan exercises and techniques, while also gaining the ability to connect your technical skills with the deeper emotional expression that makes handpan (hang drum) music so unique
