Backing tracks for this session
In this session, we will learn, practice, and perform a unique piece that is entirely based on the 3:2 polyrhythm. Polyrhythm refers to the simultaneous playing of two or more rhythmic patterns, often with different accents and stresses. This technique is considered one of the most challenging yet rewarding exercises in handpan (hang drum) playing, as well as in many other percussion instruments
The 3:2 polyrhythm requires one hand to maintain a steady two-beat rhythm while the other hand divides the same time frame into three beats. This creates a fascinating rhythmic tension and release, pushing the player to develop coordination, timing precision, and rhythmic independence
Before starting the performance of this piece, it is important to warm up your hands thoroughly. Pay close attention to the natural flow of your hand movements, the relaxed motion of your forearms, and keeping larger muscles free from unnecessary tension. This physical awareness allows you to play with greater ease, comfort, and endurance while maintaining control over the complex rhythmic structure
When practicing Piece 26, begin slowly and focus on internalizing the rhythmic layering. Gradually increase speed as your hands synchronize more naturally. Consistency, accuracy, and mindful listening are key to mastering this polyrhythm. Over time, this practice will not only strengthen your technical ability but also expand your creativity and expressive power on the handpan
