Learning and performing lessons 90 to 102 Nail and Pelang (snap) techniques on handpan

Handpan Techniques: Nail and Pelang (Inspired by Persian Tonbak)

In this lesson, we focus on two advanced handpan techniques that can transform your playing style: the Nail Techniqueand the Pelang Technique. Both are rooted in the traditional Persian Tonbak (Tombak) drumming style and bring unique textures and rhythms to handpan music. By mastering these skills, you will be able to add expressive depth, percussive variety, and a professional touch to your performances.

1. Nail Technique (Nakoni)

The nail technique involves striking specific areas of the handpan with your fingernails. This creates a sharp, percussive attack that cuts through the sound and adds an edgy accent to melodies and rhythms.

  • Focus on precision: the angle and force of the nail strike determine the clarity of the sound.

  • Start slow: repeat simple patterns using one hand at a time before increasing speed.

  • Use this technique to highlight accents or add contrast in soft passages.

2. Pelang Technique

The pelang technique, borrowed from Tonbak drumming, produces a rolling and growling effect through rapid alternating strokes of both hands.

  • It creates a deep, resonant texture similar to a soft rumble.

  • This technique requires speed, coordination, and fluid hand movement.

  • It is perfect for transitions, rhythm fills, and building intensity within a piece.

Step-by-Step Practice Method

  1. Familiarization – Start by gently tapping the handpan with open hands to get comfortable with note placement and resonance.

  2. Isolated Practice – Train each technique separately. For example, repeat simple nail strikes until they sound clean and sharp. Then practice pelang with a steady, even motion.

  3. Combine Techniques – Once confident, merge both techniques into rhythmic sequences. For instance, use nail strikes for accents and pelang for transitions.

  4. Apply to Rhythms – Practice within different time signatures, such as 6/8 or 4/4, to understand how these techniques adapt to diverse grooves.

  5. Focus on Details – Pay attention to timing, intensity, and dynamics. Small refinements elevate your playing from amateur to professional.

Why Learn Nail & Pelang on the Handpan?

These techniques not only expand your sound palette but also bring a unique Middle Eastern flavor into modern handpan performance. They connect ancient percussion traditions with contemporary handpan artistry, allowing you to:

  • Create expressive sound effects.

  • Add percussive variety to melodies.

  • Develop a professional handpan playing style.

  • Stand out with a signature rhythmic voice.

Final Tip

Consistent, mindful practice is the key. Listen closely to the tones you create, refine your strikes, and experiment with new rhythms. Over time, the Nail and Pelang techniques will become natural tools for expressing your creativity on the handpan
